The love I express for Jesus on the one hand finds its balance on the other hand in the love I receive from the Father and the Son. The more weight the pendulum has, the less precarious my balance will be. Love is a pendulum that, on the thread of Jesus' commandments, helps me to move forward. To look at Jesus is to keep his commandments, it is to love him. So to live is to see Jesus and to look at him again. Thus to live, to truly live, is to receive the commandments of Jesus and to keep them. Thus, to live, to really live, is to attentively observe the reciprocal link that, from Jesus to the Father, is propagated to me through the other, the advocate who lives in me. ![]() Thus to live, to really live, is to see Jesus alive. Since the other is in us, we will see that Jesus is in his Father and that we are in him and he in us. It is to understand the reciprocal relationship that exists between the commandments and love. Without a doubt, he will be visible to those who keep his commandments for to see him and recognize him is to understand the reciprocal relationship that exists between the Father and the Son. He will be hidden from the eyes of the world. Another advocate or defender who will never leave us, who will be with us forever. What is there to defend? A besieged citadel? Alone we cannot hold out. ![]() A life as an orphan.įrom his prayer comes a promise: the Holy Spirit, another advocate will come. He does not want any of us to be left alone. What can he fear? He is returning to his Father. Why does he pray for us? Is he worried? Worried about us? He knows that the Father did not want to leave us alone. How then can we understand this keeping of the commandments? Should we keep them, like a besieged citadel? Like a hidden secret? As a tricky balance? Or as a careful observance? Meditation Now the text shows us that, while there are plenty of commandments, their aim is simple: to love Jesus! Thus, love of the Father, knowledge of the Holy Spirit, recognition of the Son all seem to depend on keeping Jesus' commandments. At the heart of this relationship of reciprocity between a cause and its effect is, for the disciple of Jesus, access to the Father and to the Holy SpiritĪt the heart of this relationship of reciprocity, participation in the Trinitarian life plays out for the one who wants to live. Whoever loves Jesus keeps his commandments and whoever keeps his commandments is loved by Jesus.
